Introduction to a nerd

My dog Lola

Hi I am a senior at OU. I am majoring in economics and minoring in social justice. I chose economics because I was inspired my teacher in high school. Most recently the events with Gamestop and Robinhood have reminded me why I chose this major as I truly find it so exciting. My favorite TV shows are The Sopranos and Scandal. I think I enjoy The Sopranos so much because it has an excellent script and character development and I come from an Italian family. Scandal speaks to me because Olivia Pope, the main character, is a dynamic woman who knows how to get things done and in that way I would like to be her. I also enjoy reading. Most recently I read "The Great Alone" by Katherine Hannah and was moved greatly by the story of a family that decides to homestead in a very rural, very wild Alaska. Music wise I listen to a lot of alternative music but also have been a major Taylor Swift fan since I can remember. As I near closer to graduation I have given much more thought to my career. As of now I am planning on being a financial advisor. Once I have saved enough money I have plans to design an app that I hope will help a lot of women. My yellow lab Lola who lives with my parents is the love of my life. I don't think there is a more perfect living creature. I have been getting into astrology lately and my sun sign is Taurus which means I love to eat. There is nothing I won't try once and I will eat anything especially if I am trying to spare on of my friends feelings. Growing up one of my chores was always to help my mom cook dinner. At the time I resented it, but now I am thankful for my skills in the kitchen and appreciation for food. On my days off you can find me hanging out with my friends, going on walks, or painting.

  1. Hi Maddie! I think it's awesome that you're passionate about economics. I am certainly not, but I have mad respect for the people who will one day be telling me what to do with my money. I'm not a Taurus, but I also love to eat! My friends joke because I am always the first to get hangry, and if an event happens any time around noon or six pm, I ask if there will be food. I'm glad your mom made you help cook, even if it was annoying at the time. I know way too many people who can barely cook pasta! Best of luck in your last semester!

  2. Hi Maddie!
Even though I know nothing about the gamestop robinhood thing I know it was exciting to some! So cool that you knew what was happening in what was a whole mess to me. I haven't seen either of those shows but my sister and my dad have been on me to watch the Sopranos. I love alternative music too! Lola looks precious! I love seeing animals and totally relate to the perfection of pets. Congrats on senior year!

  3. Hi Maddie!

My husband was utilizing Robinhood before the Gamestop thing, so hearing all about it was very interesting! It would be amazing if you could create an app that will help women. Your puppy Lola is so precious! I love how happy she looks laying in the bed of flowers. My husband is also a Taurus, so maybe that explains why he eats so much!

  4. Hi Maddie! The GME thing was fascinating to witness, and I've noticed a surge of interest in investing in people my age and younger due to it. I started getting into investing and economics a little bit before that happened, but I was too afraid to jump into it! That's ok. I also really love the Sopranos - I just really like mafia type stuff. Good luck with senior year, and I hope you have a great semester!

  5. Hey Maddie, I'm also a senior. Like you my dog is also my best friend, I've had him since I was in 3rd grade and wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. On weekends I always hangout (usually just play poker) with my friends/roommates. I have been looking into economics just with the whole stock market craziness right now. It's a great time to get into that subject.

  6. Hi Maddie! I think it is amazing how you are studying economics and how you were inspired by your high school teacher. Witnessing everything going on with GameStop was fascinating! I have been meaning to start watching scandal because so many people have recommended that I watch it, but I just have gotten to it yet. It is definitely on my list of shows to watch next! I wish I could relate with you on skills in the kitchen but unfortunately I have no skills when it comes to the kitchen but I do love to eat!

  7. Hi Maddie! Your dog Lola is such a cutie, and what a beautiful picture of her! And it is so cool to hear that social justice is a minor you can pursue at OU now; how wonderful! Plus you are exactly right about people needing insight into managing their finances; being able to combine your economics knowledge with social justice projects sounds really powerful. Astrology can give you insight into all kinds of things (and tarot too; I really like messing with tarot cards)... but when it comes to your finances, economics is definitely better than astrology. And everybody who learned how to cook has had a big boost during the pandemic. I've been cooking and baking some things that I honestly hadn't done in the kitchen since I was a little kid but now cooking is kind of entertainment... and as entertainment goes, it can be pretty fun. The spicier the better is my motto, and I guess I will keep on cooking some of these things after the pandemic too... although it sure will be nice to start going out again someday soon too I hope. :-)

  8. Hey Maddie! I have not seen either of your favorite TV shows, but I have heard a lot about them. I am interested to hear more about your app, but I imagine you might want to keep your ideas secret until you are able to take charge and develop it. I am glad to hear you believe it will help a lot of women! I would love to have a dog someday, and reading about your love for your dog makes me even more excited about the possibility!

  9. Hey Maddie! Unfortunately I am only just now getting the chance to explore your blog but let me tell you I love your site name. It is killing me. While I have not seen The Sopranos almost all of my friends have and they quote it constantly so maybe you have given me ta push to watch it. I am excited to learn more about you through your writing!

  10. Hello Maddie,

I love your passion to help women and good luck on your journey to becoming a financial advisor! I also resented helping in the kitchen as a child but as a college student I am so grateful I did. It is so important to know to cook for yourself and look after yourself. I actually really love cooking now. I wish you the best in the future, It was nice meeting you!

  11. Hi Maddie!
I love that you were inspired by your teacher in high school to pursue a major in economics and a minor in social justice! I also really love the show Scandal for the character Olivia Pope – especially her line of “What do you want”! I also love to eat and cook food – it's just so fun! Have a great semester ahead of you!

  12. Hey Maddie!

I am a senior at OU majoring in psychology and minoring in sociology. I love alternative music. My taste for music is so different because I love the genre of music that many people tend to not like as much. Astrology sounds so interesting. I would love to get into it one day. Painting is one of my hobbies. I once won first place in a statewide art contest.

  13. Hi Maddie,

I am also a senior at OU, and feel like time is flying by. Even though I am not in the field, I too found the Gamestop and Robinhood situation to be fascinating. It's funny that you say that one of your chores was you had to help you mom cooking. I had to do that as well, but am glad I did because I feel like can learn more from it

  14. Hello Maddie! It is very cool that you have found something you are passionate about. I took macro and micro accounting and I find them fascinating as well. I would also be very interested to hear about your idea for an app. Sounds like you have a great, rewarding future ahead of you. Good luck and have fun finishing up your senior year!

  15. Hey Maddie! It's definitely a super fascinating time to get into social justice, if a little overwhelming. I'm sure you'll find it very fulfilling, just make sure to take time for yourself as well because it's very easy to get burned out if you're not careful. Of course, I'm sure you already know all that. Anyway, Lola is gorgeous and I wish you the best for your semester.

  16. Hello Maddie. I think that it is really cool that you like to eat as I too am a big fan of that activity and am always down to try new things. I also love helping out with cooking whether it is with my family or my friends. I also think that it is cool you are majoring in economics as I too have a fascination with the economy and how general trends shape the economy.

  17. Hi Maddie!
Your dog is adorable! I am a huge animal lover and have a dog of my own here in Norman. I am also a huge fan of eating, and although I do not enjoy cooking, I am glad that I do have some skills in the kitchen. Your major/minor sound really interesting! I am certainly not well versed in economics and know practically nothing about money or the economy, but I would like to understand more in the future. It is really cool that you know what you want to do and who you want to be! Good luck in the future!

  18. Hi Maddie! Your dog is super cute! I'm like you and love to eat but I'm actually a really picky eater! I will try everything once but if I hate it, never again. Well, sometimes I'll try a small bite to see if things have changed but 9 times out of 10, it hasn't. My friends also know not to offer me food because I'm like you and like to spare their feelings and I know I just wouldn't be able to haha! Congrats on graduating and good luck in all of your future endeavors!

  19. Hey Maddie!
I never got in on any of the GME business, but I have been trying to keep up with it. It's fascinating to see all of this go down in real time. If things go Reddit's way, I'd be curious to see if they make a movie about it someday similar to The Big Short.

As far as the Robinhood side of things, I used them for awhile. Even though I never bought into GME and I understand their reasoning, the way they handled the situation did rub me the wrong way, so I switched to Fidelity instead. Had the added benefit of me finally opening a retirement account though!

  20. Hi Maddie!
Although I have never seen the show Scandal, my roommate is absolutely obsessed with it. She has seen six seasons in about a month. I might just have to give it a shot! Your dog is absolutely adorable and looks similar to mine. I have a chocolate Labradoodle, they are just so precious. I hope you have a great and healthy rest of your semester.

  21. Hey Maddie,
I really like your lock screen! Lola is gorgeous! I too enjoy alt music, and I love Taylor Swift! I was super into astrology like two years back. My boyfriend is a Taurus too! Being a financial advisor seems a lot of work. I know I am in a desperate need of a financial advisor haha. I hope you have enjoyed this class. Good luck for your future endeavors!

  22. Hi Maddie!
I love the show Scandal! Characters like Olivia Pope were not something we saw on screen often, but now so many young women can look up to her and see themselves in her. She really is such a dynamic and strong woman, like you said. Your dog Lola is precious! That photo of her is so perfect. I wish you luck on your path after graduation (one more week!) and I hope that one day your can develop your app!

  23. Hey Maddie!

I'm also an economics major! It's cool to see someone with the same interests in this class. I also love that you mentioned Gamestop and Robinhood lol. I've been trading a lot of crypto recently. I also have a dog that is back home with my family who I miss very much. You seem really cool and it sounds like you have great plans for the future!

  24. Hi Maddie!

I am glad to hear that you found a major that fit you and you are enjoying it as it continues to progress. It is difficult for people to find things that they want to do for the rest of their life. The GME events was a blast and I must say that it will go down in history of finance and hardly could be forgotten ever.

  25. Hi Maddie! Your dog is so adorable. I have a Golden Retriever and I love her so much. I also thought the Gamestop and Robinhood scandal was so interesting. Also, that book sounds so cool. I definitely have to it to my reading list. Your idea for an app sounds so cool. I hope I am able to use it one day.
